Education Seminars On Medicines - Publication Of Details By Medicines Australia

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

Medicines Australia (MA) has posted on its website the details of all education events provided or sponsored for healthcare practitioners by MA member companies. The ACCC has said that the publication of company events is the best way to bring greater public accountability for these events.

AMA President, Dr Rosanna Capolingua, said that pharmaceutical company sponsored education seminars providing doctors with new information about medicines must comply with the MA Code of Conduct.

Dr Capolingua said that the AMA supports the delivery of this information because it is in the best interests of patients that doctors are fully informed about new or improved utilisation of medicines.

"New and improved medicines save lives and improve the quality of life for Australians with illness," Dr Capolingua said.

"Pharmaceutical companies who research and develop medicines have the most extensive information about a therapeutic drug, including its benefits and possible side-effects, and pass on this information at education seminars.

"Currently, this is a rapid and readily available comprehensive source of education about these new or improved medicines.

"It is a great advantage for doctors who attend these education seminars to be able to interrogate the manufacturers of the medicine, discuss and look at the data, and gain knowledge before prescribing it for their patients.

"Doctor education for medicines is essential for the quality use of medicines. Doctors will prescribe appropriate medicines for patients based on clinical needs.

"We support the Medicines Australia Code of Conduct as the appropriate mechanism to rule out any inappropriate marketing and promotion by the pharmaceutical companies of their products. It is incumbent upon Medicines Australia to enforce its Code so that the community can have confidence in the integrity of these education programs," Dr Capolingua said.

The AMA supports an efficient, financially viable, and innovative pharmaceutical industry. Australians are very fortunate to have relatively quick access to new medicines that are safe and affordable. The AMA Code of Ethics maintains that doctors must safeguard their clinical independence and professional integrity from the influence of third parties. Doctors are highly trained health professionals. They are trained to think independently and to make decisions in the best interests of the patient.

Fact Sheet - Education Seminars on Medicines

Fact One: Australians have world-class access to quality medicines

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) ensures the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines. The regulatory framework is based on a risk management approach designed to ensure public health and safety, while at the same time freeing industry from any unnecessary regulatory burden. This ensures that the Australian community has access, within a reasonable time, to therapeutic advances.

The TGA also requires that promotional material produced by pharmaceutical manufacturers complies with the Code of Conduct.

Ongoing safety and quality is backed up by the Australian Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting System. State and Territory Governments regulate access to, and storage of, medicines.

Under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), Australians have reliable, timely and affordable access to a wide range of medicines at a Government-subsidised price. These medicines have been subjected to rigorous, independent evaluation.

Fact Two: The Medicines Australia (MA) Code of Conduct complements the regulatory framework

The MA Code sets the standards for the ethical marketing and promotion of prescription pharmaceutical products in Australia. The Code of Conduct is an extensive document, covering all aspects of marketing and promotion of pharmaceutical products, and MA member organisations self-regulate against the Code. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) requires Medicines Australia to publish six-monthly reports on expenditure on educational events.

Fact Three: Australians' health outcomes have been significantly improved by new medicines

Medicines play a vital role in improving patient health outcomes and in the fight against disease. For example, better medicines to manage heart disease have avoided the need for operations and allow people to have a better quality of life. Improvements to asthma medications have led to better health outcomes for children. Diabetes medications are assisting in the management of the disease.

Fact Four: Patients would expect their doctors to know about newly available medicines and advances with other medicines

To ensure their patients receive the best available treatment, doctors need timely information about the latest medical advancements.

Fact Five: Pharmaceutical companies have the information doctors need

A responsible pharmaceutical industry should provide ongoing, objective and scientifically valid interpretations of data on prescription medicines to doctors.
Fact Six: Educational events to inform doctors should meet the industry Code

The pharmaceutical company has responsibility to the MA Code. Doctors attending an educational event would expect it be in accordance with the MA Code.

Fact Seven: Educational events may attract continuing professional development points

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) accredits education providers and education activity representatives to provide education as part of the RACGP Quality Assurance and Continuing Professional Development Program. The program seeks to provide GPs with opportunities to participate in high quality educational activities that emphasise patient safety. Doctors attending an educational event that purports to have RACGP accreditation would expect it to be accurate and objective.

Fact Eight: There is a strong separation between prescribing and dispensing

There is no financial gain to doctors from prescribing one brand of pharmaceutical over another. The pharmacist dispenses the pharmaceutical and 97 per cent of decisions about what brand is dispensed occur at the pharmacy. In 2006, the Department of Health and Ageing confirmed that doctors tick the 'brand substitution not permitted' box in fewer than three per cent of scripts written.

Fact Nine: The AMA supports an efficient, financially viable, and innovative pharmaceutical industry

Australians are very fortunate to have relatively quick access to new medicines that are safe and affordable. Pharmaceutical companies can only be innovative when they are financially viable. Appropriate marketing of their products, in accordance with the MA Code of Conduct, should be free from criticism.

Fact Ten: The AMA Code of Ethics contains relevant provisions

The AMA Code of Ethics maintains that doctors must safeguard their clinical independence and professional integrity from the influence of third parties. In addition, the AMA has a Position Statement on the relationship between doctors and the pharmaceutical industry. The Position Statement advocates that professional interactions between doctors and the pharmaceutical industry should be transparent and must have as their primary objective the advancement of the health of patients rather than the self-interests of either doctors or the industry itself.

Fact Eleven: Doctors are highly trained health professionals

Doctors are trained to think independently and to make decisions in the best interests of the patient. Most doctors would find it offensive and inaccurate to suggest they would either prescribe a medication for a patient where one was not needed or prescribe an inferior medication on the grounds that the manufacturer of that product had conferred some benefit on the doctor.

Blood Pressure Raised By Aircraft Noise, Even During Sleeping, Says Study

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

Night-time noise from aircraft or traffic can increase a person's blood pressure even if it does not wake them, according to a new study published today in the European Heart Journal.

Scientists from Imperial College London and other European institutions monitored 140 sleeping volunteers in their homes near London Heathrow and three other major European airports.

The researchers measured the volunteers' blood pressure remotely at 15-minute intervals and then analysed how this related to the noise recorded in the volunteers' bedrooms.

People with high blood pressure (hypertension) have an increased risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and dementia. High blood pressure is defined by World Health Organisation as being 140/90mmHg or more.

The researchers found that volunteers' blood pressure increased noticeably after they experienced a 'noise event' - a noise louder than 35 decibels - such as aircraft travelling overhead, traffic passing outside, or a partner snoring. This effect could be seen even if the volunteer remained asleep and so was not consciously disturbed.

Aircraft noise events caused an average increase in systolic blood pressure of 6.2 mmHg and an average increase in diastolic blood pressure of 7.4 mmHg. Similar increases in blood pressure were seen also for other noise sources such as road traffic.

The researchers found that the increase in blood pressure was related to the loudness of the noise, so that a greater increase in blood pressure could be seen where the noise level was higher. For example, for every 5dB increase in aircraft noise at its loudest point, there was an increase of 0.66 mmHg in systolic blood pressure.

The decibel level - and not the origin of the sound - was the key factor in determining the effect that each noise event had on the volunteers' blood pressure, with similar effects regardless of the type of noise, where the 'loudness' of the noise was the same.

The research follows recent findings by the same researchers, showing that people who have been living for at least five years near an international airport, under a flight path, have a greater risk of developing high blood pressure than a population living in quieter areas. That study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, showed that an increase in night-time aeroplane noise of 10dB increased the risk of high blood pressure by 14 per cent in both men and women.

Dr Lars Jarup, one of the authors of the study from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Imperial College London, said: "We know that noise from air traffic can be a source of irritation, but our research shows that it can also be damaging for people's health, which is particularly significant in light of plans to expand international airports. Our studies show that night-time aircraft noise can affect your blood pressure instantly and increase the risk of hypertension.

It is clear to me that measures need to be taken to reduce noise levels from aircraft, in particular during night-time, in order to protect the health of people living near airports."

The researchers are continuing their analyses to find out whether combined exposure to noise and air pollution increases the risk of heart disease.

Both studies were carried out as part of the Hypertension and Exposure to Noise near Airports (HYENA) project, a four-year study exploring the health effects associated with exposure to aircraft noise. The project includes cross-sectional studies near major airports in Germany (Berlin Tegel), Greece (Athens), Italy (Milano Malpensa), the Netherlands (Amsterdam Schiphol), Sweden (Stockholm Arlanda) and the UK (London Heathrow), including a total of 5,000 study subjects. Dr Jarup is the Principal Investigator for HYENA.

Tips About Sunless Tanning And Its Products

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

Tanning does not make sense. It is an unnecessary risk to your health and the way you look. People have no problem condemning cigarette smoke, and they believe in exercising and staying healthy through diet. So it does not make a bit of sense to turn around and jeopardize their health by lying in the sun unprotected. To make matters worse, many go to a sun tanning booth to get a tan before the summer months. You can skip the tanning booth and go with a sunless tanning method that can give the same results.

The revenues off of sunless tanning products have soared through the proverbial roof. It is estimated that companies producing the sunless tanning lotions are making over fifty million dollars each year. As awareness of the ravages that ultra violet light plays on the human body increases, some people are deciding that having a natural tan is not worth risking their lives over. One in five people will develop skin cancer at some point in their lives. There is no need to increase the odds of this happening.

Self tanning lotions are very popular because they no longer cause you to look orange. Most have moisturizing ingredients that can help you keep your skin supple while still providing that glow. It is essentially dying your skin temporarily. It will come off if you make a mistake and find streaks or blotches. There are some tricks to keeping your self tanning lotions from causing these problems.

To get that nice tan you will need to do a few things before you start slathering on the sunless tanning lotion. Take a shower and make sure and exfoliate your body pretty well. When you get out of the shower, you'll need to rub moisturizing lotion into your skin before using the self tanning product. This will help ensure that there are no dry patches on your body. Apply a very thin coat of the sunless product. You do not need to coat your skin in a heavy layer. A little bit at a time will ensure no streaking.

Once you have that beautiful glow you were looking for, you can maintain the tan with a sunless tanning product about once a week. As your skin cells die and shed, you will begin losing the color, so a once a week application is a great idea for maintenance. Using a sunless product makes sense. Do not endanger your life and appearance by baking yourself in a tanning bed or with beach tanning. It is just not worth it.

Call For Equal Access To Cervical Cancer Treatment For All Women And Girls

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

A comprehensive prevention strategy for reducing the threat of cervical cancer has been called for by the World Medical Association and the Medical Women's International Association.

In a joint statement to mark international women's day tomorrow, the two organisations demand action for women and girls around the world to have equal access to the highest quality prevention and treatment options for cervical cancer and say that such a strategy should include screening and vaccination.

Dr. Shelley Ross, Secretary-General of the Medical Women's International Association, said: 'Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women. But it is now preventable due to the availability of a vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV)'.

She said that every year cervical cancer affected 500,000 women and took the lives of a quarter million women worldwide. Women in poor countries were the most affected, with 80 per cent of the deaths from cervical cancer due to extremely limited screening and treatment availability.

Dr. Ross added: 'When reflecting back on major advances in women's health in years to come, HPV vaccine will be listed as one of the major breakthroughs. It is urgent that governments across the world start prioritizing cervical cancer with sustainable political and financial commitments. Not doing so means losing lives. It means also not granting to women and girls in poor countries the right to equal access to life-saving technologies'.

Four of the common types of HPV could be prevented through vaccination although there was currently no treatment available which could cure an HPV infection. HPV vaccine therefore had the potential to substantially reduce the prevalence of cervical cancer, although not to eradicate it.

Dr. Jon Snaedal, President of the WMA, said 'Medical associations have a key role to play in this strategy in making information on HPV vaccine available to physicians and to encourage physicians to alert their patients on this innovation'.

'Cost must not be a barrier to making the vaccine available to women and girls worldwide. We are calling for a strong mobilisation of decision-makers, international organisations, international donor community and development partners, as well as medical associations, civil society and industry to act now for a change, to stop cervical cancer'.

The World Medical Association is the independent confederation of national medical associations from more than 80 countries and represents more than eight million physicians. Acting on behalf of patients and physicians, the WMA endeavours to achieve the highest possible standards of medical care, ethics, education and health-related human rights for all people.
